With over 27 years of front-line experience working within the anti-violence field supporting survivors who have experienced gender-based violence Rosa Elena Arteaga is currently the Director of Clinical Practice and Direct Services with Battered Women’s Support Services.

Throughout her social activism, community organizing, and trauma-informed therapeutic practice, Rosa Elena brings with her a collaborative, non-judgmental, ethical, and compassionate approach. Rosa Elena has worked on projects that have influenced policies to support girls, women, and femmes who have experienced gender-based violence.

Through an intersectional feminist, anti-oppression, and decolonizing approach Rosa Elena has created and implemented programs and facilitated numerous workshops on violence prevention and intervention locally, nationally, and internationally.

Since 2008, Rosa Elena has researched and addressed the issue of battered women being wrongfully arrested. She sees herself as a strong advocate for social justice and social change.

Rosa Elena holds a master’s degree in Narrative Therapy and Community Work from Melbourne University. Additionally, Rosa Elena is a trauma-informed narrative therapist. She has developed a powerfully innovative narrative therapy-informed social justice/feminist-inspired therapeutic practice to support survivors from diverse backgrounds who are experiencing complex trauma and violence. Rosa guides participants far beyond popular ideas on trauma-informed therapy by situating the complexities of gender violence and trauma within cultural, racial, and gender politics. She has also created novel ways to interview the body. Her work is informed by the thousands of hours assisting survivors of GBV.
